Saint Petersburg is one of the largest Russian cities, as well as its cultural capital. You will learn its history and see all the main chef-d'oeuvres, thanks to which the city is known as the open-air Museum: the Hermitage and Palace Square, St. Isaac's Cathedral, Admiralty, the Bronze Horseman, the easternmost tip of Vasilevsky island, called Strelka (Arrow), the Peter and Paul fortress, Nevsky prospect, Kazan Cathedral, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood /no visiting museums/.

Hermitage State Museum is housed in the former Winter Palace on the Neva embankment in the very heart of the city. The Hermitage, as it name suggests, is a place of seclusion. It is the name that Russian Empress Catherine the Great bestowed on the part of her palace where she kept unique art treasures. Historians consider this museum to have been founded in the year of 1764.

Peter and Paul fortress: Peter the Great decided to build fortress on the small island where the Neva divides into two channels, the Greater and the Lesser Neva. The foundation-stone was laid on 27 May, 1703, the date now regarded as the city’s birthday. The fortress, the cradle of St. Petersburg, moored like a vessel, by two slight bridges, to the island of Aptekarskiy above its walls shot up the gilded steeple of the of SS. Peter and Paul Church, where Russian Czars are buried, and the green roof of the Mint. It was also a prison for principle state criminals. Peter and Paul fortress was opened to the public at the beginning of the 19th century under Alexander I. Today it houses the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg.

Cathedral: In 1712 Trezzini began construction of a large stone Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul in the fortress. The composition of the cathedral wall repeats that of the Peter Gate. The carved and gilded iconostasis also reminds one of sumptuous triumphal arch. The themes of war and peace can easily be detected in its numerous carved figures. Thus the fortress’s triumphal gate and the large cathedral form a memorial to Russian military prowess.

The Catherine Palace, the luxury of which is impossible to express by words! The palace is best known for Rastrelli's grand suit of formal rooms known as the Golden Enfilade.
